This piece focuses on the scale of space and the fragile presence of a single astronaut. I kept the astronaut and spacecraft simple in form so the main focus would stay on the planet below. Built in Blender with Photoshop textures, it’s more about atmosphere and mood than hyper-detailed modeling.

MODELING

MODELING

The astronaut and ship are kept minimal, with clean shapes and strong silhouettes. The Earth was modeled as a subdivided sphere so the textures would wrap smoothly.

TEXTURING

I used Earth maps edited in Photoshop for oceans, ice, and clouds. The astronaut and ship use clean metallics to contrast with the planet.

LIGHTING AND RENDERING

A single directional light stands in for the sun, producing hard shadows and highlighting Earth’s curvature.

VFX

Stars are scattered in the background to reinforce the feeling of empty space.

INSPIRATIONS

NASA’s space photography and films like Gravity and Interstellar.

CHALLENGES AND SOLUTIONS

On the one hand, rendering Earth’s atmosphere without long volumetric render times was such a challenge and then, I came up with the soliution of using a gradient and layered shaders with transparency to fake depth.

FUTURE IMPROVEMENTS

Adding orbital motion, small astronaut animation, and space debris would make the scene feel more alive.
